-Developed by Paul Mockapetris and never patented (Saint Samaritan)
-Enables netwide resolution of domain names to IP addresses (in A)
-Saves humans from memorizing and decoding stuff like 123.234.42.21
-Exploits netwide database of host information, constantly updated
-Regulates e-mail delivery and priority through MX record
-Requires 2+ NameServers (NS1/NS2), authoritative for every domain.
-Implies dissemination of updated info throughout all nameservers (refresh,
TTL)
-Permits equation of a domain name with another (A.com=B.com - CNAME)
-Baffles and frunstrates 99% of impatient newcomers
