It is certainly possible, you just follow the following steps:

- Make sure the the zone you would like to register (assuming it is a
new zone) is configured on your name servers. You need at least two
name servers to be authoritative for the zone.

- Once the name servers know about your zone you can complete the
registration template from za.net.

Points to remember is to make sure the the fully qualified domain
names of your DNS servers resolve to the IP addresses that you are
listing on the template. Although not a necessity, it is a good thing
if the IP addresses of the DNS servers also resolve back to the fully
qualified domain names.

I would also suggest that you check with the vendor who supplied you
with the hosting package about the use of 3rd party name servers (I am
assuming this is what you mean by "private name servers").  Most
hosting packages include name services, so they may not support the
package if the DNS is not under their control, which is understandable
if they are responsible for the availability of the hosting.
