Re: [FreeDNS] Why..

GrahamD:
I personally like to be able to get a general idea of the nature of a
website/company from its domain name, and I know I tend to get very irate
when I see people registering private websites under .co.za. ... I get
equally irate when SA companies register .com's, but that's another debate.

LeuceV:
I don't mind the "misuse" of the .co.za. The description and registration
qualifyers for .co.za is so open that just about anyone can register in it.
For .org.za the situation is different, for example. I won't search for a
company by searching in site:.co.za, but I will search for a law in
site:.gov.za. I think one of the reasons why .co.za is more popular than
.nom.za is because the "co" is one letter shorter. Personally I think that
.k12.za would have been a better choice than .school.za for the naming of
that cat, since it is slightly less Anglo-centric. And why "edu.za" instead
of the simpler "ed.za"? I guess different people will have different
opinions.

I recently registered a .com name instead of a .co.za name. Why? Because
my host is a reseller and to register a .co.za requires reverse DNS which my
host did not have at the time. Besides a .com name is more recognisable
internationally. There's not much of a price difference, either. A .co.za
will set you back R200, whereas a .com will cost EUR12.00 (which is actually
less than R200). And although the .info and .biz where initally quite
expensive ($65 in the sunrise), they are now equally accessible at under $20
a pop.
