Still not quite enough info to troubleshoot the problem remotely, I'm afraid.
Plus, I've never used djbdns.

If you use dig(1) from (preferably) a machine other than your nameserver, can
you verify that your nameserver does indeed respond that it is authoritative
for the domain?

Silly question, but are you sure that BIND's named is not still enabled in
/etc/rc.conf?  If it is, it'll bind to 53/udp before djbdns is started from
the script in ${PREFIX}/etc/rc.d.
