Unfortunately, yes, it's a free service.
One of my web hosts have recently gone very bad service-wise with outages all over the show, and I'm thinking of moving. The thing that keeps me from making the jump to a new webhost, however, is the fact that the FreeDNS details updates can take a long, long time...
Tis a pity I got two of my clients domain names in .za.net, way back when they didn't want to spend any money. We could have had .co.za for just R50 per year, with much better support, but here we are... stuck.
There was a time when FreeDNS updates were done fairly quickly, though. The good old days, it seems.
